Importance of Mentoring

Long Preparation

The preparation lasts for at least one year and the examination process is of another 1 year. So even if a candidate clears in the first attempt, he needs to prepare for atleast 2 years. And as most of the candidates clear the exam in the 2nd attempt (which is also considered to be the best attempt), it is approx. 3 years of preparation. In such a long process, it is very difficult to maintain focus, discipline and consistency. Many times the candidates feel very low, not able to understand how to move forward. In such a circumstance, a direction from an experienced mentor would be of great help.

A large number of subjects and huge syllabus

There are 13 subjects in the GS Mains exam and each one of them has to be studied deeply. Mains answers for each one of these subjects require technical terms. Solving MCQs require in depth knowledge and conceptual clarity. Without guidance, a student can easily get lost in the vast ocean of knowledge.

Too many skills required:

Answer writing, MCQ solving, essay writing etc are required from a candidate. A mentor can easily guide about all these processes.

Too much content and still fear of missing out:

A lot of information is available on YouTube and Telegram. But without guidance, it is difficult to separate the relevant information from the irrelevant. A lot of strategy videos are available online where everyone is giving the same solution to everyone (same medicine for different problems).

Peer and Parental Pressure:

Most of the students find themselves burdened because of expectations of their parents and relatives. Moreover, social media updates of their college friends, further weigh them down

Who requires Mentorship?

Freshers

(Students who have not even attempted the exam and have just started the preparation):

They need help on notes preparation, newspaper reading, finding suitable material for a topic etc. They also need help on how to handle a lot of small questions just before prelims viz. how many mock tests should be written before prelims, how many times one should revise each subject, when should one leave preparation of the mains and optional and start for prelims. Most importantly they need a help in the case where the foundation program of GS is completed and they are not able to score good in the mock exams.

Failing prelims multiple times:

These students appear in prelims multiple times but are unable to qualify. They attempt a lot of mocks, but are still not able to clear the cutoff. They are not able to maximise the output from the prelims test series. They actually do not understand about what is the exact need of test series for them : is it a way to revise or a way to prepare or a way of self evaluation or a way to add knowledge. They just join a test series as everyone else is doing. Add to that the stress of not scoring well in the mock test series and students find themselves stuck.

Failing mains multiple times:

  • Scoring well in mains test series but not getting translated into increasing mains score.
  • Regularly scoring less in a specific subject
  • Not able to complete all the questions in the
    mains exam

A lot of academically strong but financially weak students would get a great help if a little direction is given to their preparation
